PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Annual General Meeting
September 24, 2011

Degree and Diploma Programmes - In 2010-2011 a total of 143 students graduated from ICMI, 42 with a Bachelors degree in Health Administration and 101 with a Diploma in Health Administration. Seven of the degree students graduated with a First Class Honours Degree. The remaining 35 degree students received Second Class Honours. This was one of many blessings that the Lord bestowed on us in 2010-2011.  As of August 3, 2011 there were 32 students in the Degree programme and 22 students in the Diploma programme. Fifty students applied to join the Diploma class that began August 15, 2011.

Distance Education - In 2008-2009 ICMI conducted a survey of its graduates to determine the viability of offering a Distance Education programme in Health Administration for individuals living in remote areas. A questionnaire was designed to determine the perceived need for distance education in Uganda. Ninety-four questionnaires were completed and returned. Julia Hassler correlated the data. Tim Orr analyzed the data and prepared a summary Report in January 2010. The survey “strongly indicated that respondents would like ICMI to continue investigating a Distance Education option.” In 2010 the Board of ICMI Canada, in cooperation with the Principal of ICMI Uganda, began to review the possibilities of embarking on a Distance Education programme in Uganda. A Distance Education Committee was struck with Nigel Lomas as Chair. Other members of the committee include: Dr. Carl Garry, Loraine Spencer Garry and Julia Hassler. On behalf of ICMI I want to thank Nigel his hard work.

Volunteers - In 2011 ICMI asked Julia Hassler to Chair the Student Volunteer Programme. In 2011 four student volunteers were recruited and selected to go to Uganda. They were Erika Smith, Mallory Marshall, Pam Dheri and Jared Hidber. All were from Microbiology at the University of Victoria. Thank you to all our student volunteers and to Julia Hassler for agreeing to coordinate the programme.

Principal’s New Residence and Guest House - I am very happy to report that construction on the Principal’s Residence is completed and Dr. Edward Mukooza has moved into his new house with his family. We thank God for enabling us to complete this important building project. We thank all of our donors for their financial support that made the project possible. Living in his new accommodations on campus, Dr. Edward Mukooza can now save more than three hours a day travelling time. Praise the Lord! The Guest House is approximately 90% completed. I understand there are some finishing touches to be done to the building before ICMI takes possession. The big challenge after that will be to raise sufficient money, approximately $15,000, to furnish the Guest Rooms. The Guest House is going to be a blessing for our Canadian volunteers. It will provide them with clean, safe, reasonably priced accommodation right on campus where they can walk to their classes. On behalf of ICMI I want to say a special thank you to Cedric Trueman who worked tirelessly as Chairman of the Building Committee.

Master’s Degree - ICMI Canada and ICMI Uganda are currently studying the feasibility of offering a Master’s Degree in Health Administration. The ICMI Academic Committee, Chaired by Dr. Carl Garry, has been asked to examine the feasibility of offering this new degree.

In summary, ICMI has accomplished a lot in 2010-2011. Students continue to graduate with their Diplomas and Degrees from our ICMI academic programmes. New students continue to apply to join the programmes. We have successfully completed construction on a house for the Dr. Edward Mukooza. Work on the Guest House is nearing completion. New initiatives including development of a Distance Education programme and a Masters Degree programme are underway.

ICMI is an organization where big doors swing on small hinges. Please continue to pray that the Lord will bless the work of ICMI in the days and months ahead opening new doors for us and guiding us in the direction He would have us go.

Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Carl Garry
